Melanie Goes to RV Driving School
Congratulations to my wife, Melanie, who just successfully completed two days of RV Driver training on September 30, 2022. She now has a certificate proving she is qualified to drive our 43 foot, 44,000 lb (50,000 lb including towed Jeep) Winnebago Tour 42Qd diesel motorhome.
We drove the RV to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia, AL where we met her instructor for lessons Thursday and Friday. Introductory driving and backing lessons were done there because the HOF has a huge, unused parking lot behind the main building. It's pretty hard to hit anything there, regardless of how inept you are.
I opted to pay for lessons rather than try to teach her myself. That increases the odds of staying married another 15 years. She has been hesitant to drive an RV since she nearly turned a parked 30 ft Airstream trailer into a 20 ft Airstream trailer in a rest area 5-6 years ago when she couldn't find the brake pedal on our RV.
Yesterday she mastered backing into a 45 degree and 90 degree parking place, then hit the road for two hours of driving on all types of rural roads and highways.
After her lesson we toured the AMHOF. It was very interesting and informative to learn how many national stars recorded major hits in the Muscle Shoals studios. I highly recommend it as a day trip destination. The Prevost bus used by the group Alabama when touring in the 70's and 80's was on display. I don't want to trade for it.
We spent the night in the parking lot (AMHOF is a Harvest Hosts RV site). Today she spent 4 hours driving through the business and downtown areas of Tuscumbia, Sheffield, Muscle Shoals and Florence, AL. She was fearless and received no one fingered salutes that I could confirm. She went places that would have made me nervous driving. With her instructor's guidance, she did great.
Now we're off to see more of the USA and I don't have to do all the driving.
